Kuopio City of Dance Event

On Thursday 11 June, Circus Live will host the Kuopio City of Dance Day, as dance organisations from Kuopio gather under one roof to showcase their activities and offer a diverse programme.

At Circus Live’s Shop & Info, you will also find a lucky wheel, where you can win prizes from local dance schools (limited number of prizes). We will also enjoy live music and dance led by the Kuopio Big Band.

Program:

13.30 ITAK – The Regional Dance Center of Eastern Finland
The Regional Dance Center of Eastern Finland will present its activities. The adult contemporary dance group Tavis Dance Company’s Research Group will introduce itself. On display is a photographic series created during the Research Group’s spring working period. The group is led by Anna-Maria Väisänen, with photography by Karri Lämpsä.

14.00 (30 min) Dance Theatre Minimi
Dance Theatre Minimi is hosting an open body maintenance and mobility session, and everyone is welcome to join! The session will include movements that open up and strengthen the body, with a particular focus on the core, both on the floor and standing. Exercise mats will be available on site. The class will be led by dance artist and dance teacher Virva Torkko-Muñoz

14.30 (30 min) Cuban salsa 40+
Cuban salsa is a dance and music genre born from traditional Cuban rhythms that have conquered the world. Salsa is joyful and captivating, and its smooth movements and versatile steps have won the hearts of countless dance enthusiasts. Come and experience what salsa feels like in your own body! The session will be led by Sirpa Möksy from Kuopio SalsaStudio.

15.00 (30 min) Kuopio Conservatory
Come and get to know our activities and dance with us — the dance session is intended for children approximately 3–8 years old.

15.30 (30min) Dance Flow
The Easy Dance group of Dance Flow will guide you into the world of dance with easy steps. A teaching session featuring the most popular social dances, Bugg and Fusku. Welcome to join us!

17:00 Kuopio Big Band performs
Kuopio Big Band is a unique musical treasure in the city of Kuopio. This vibrant and talented orchestra is dedicated to bringing the magical world of big band music closer to the people of Kuopio.

18.30 (45min) Kuopion Tanssitupa
Welcome to experience the pulse and rhythm of Finnish dance and music traditions!

At Tanssitupa, participants will learn traditional folk partner and group dances and explore improvisation in a relaxed, low-threshold atmosphere accompanied by live music. Together, we will tune into the inseparable connection between music and dance, as well as the energetic, ceremonial, meditative, and playful qualities of folk dance.

No previous dance experience or partner is required. You can participate according to your own abilities, and the level of participation can be adapted to suit you. You are also welcome to simply listen to the dance and music and enjoy the shared atmosphere.

Led by dance artist Outi Markkula and musician Jenni Venäläinen.
